PennDOT to Improve Route 29 (Gravel Pike) Bridge over Swamp Creek in Lower Frederick Township, Montgomery County

King of Prussia, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will start construction Monday, May 2, on a $200,000 project to rehabilitate the structurally deficient bridge carrying Route 29 (Gravel Pike) over Swamp Creek in Lower Frederick Township, Montgomery County. The bridge is scheduled to reopen in late October 2016.

Crews will work the next six months to restore the structurally deficient Route 29 bridge by repairing the steel beams and rehabilitating the superstructure. Once completed, the bridge will no longer be categorized as structurally deficient.

During construction, traffic on Route 29 (Gravel Pike) will be restricted to a single lane between Meng Road and Zieglerville Road. Traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals at either end of the bridge. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling over the bridge.

The three-span steel beam bridge was built in 1947. The bridge is 192 feet long, 38 feet wide and carries an average of 12,138 vehicles a day.

The Route 29 bridge is one of three bridges that PennDOT will repair under a $6,637,980 bridge improvement project. On February 18, 2016, PennDOT opened the newly rehabilitated bridge carrying Aston Mills Road over Chester Creek in Aston Township, Delaware County, and on November 25, 2015, PennDOT reopened the bridge carrying Linfield Road over the Schuylkill River in East Coventry Township, Chester County, and Limerick Township, Montgomery County, following its rehabilitation.

J. D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa., is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
